Roska’s weekly Rinse FM podcasts and his appearance at Lovebox festival provided the perfect soundtrack to my summer last year, so I was extremely pleased to get my hands on his second full-length EP, aptly titled, Roska 2.
Released on Rinse FM’s imprint, Rinse Presents, Roska 2 is a 10-track blend of heavy bass, sweet vocals, and good vibes. Kicking off with You Dun Know – a track I’ve heard at various clubs over the last 10 or so months and can’t get enough of. I think I love this track so much because it works perfectly in any situation, be it at a club or while you’re chilling out at home (or in my case, having a nervous breakdown over uni coursework).
Roska 2 experiments with a variety of sounds, reflecting his growth as a producer. Memories feat. Ruby Goe and OnRinseSinceZeroEight are two tracks that tilt over to the bouncy, electro side of the spectrum, but perfectly compliment heavier tracks such as Go featuring Mz Bratt and Spanner In The Works featuring Swindle and Funtcase, which close the album.
Track four, Do You Like This featuring Jamie George has already gained popularity over the Rinse FM circuit and, along with tracks five and seven The Oracle and Badman featuring Sweetie Irie – weighty tunes, inspired by Roska’s UK Funky roots – are set to be huge hits this summer.
Roska 2 is a great follow up to his previous releases and the ultimate warm up to summer raving. Catch him at this year’s Lovebox festival and every Tuesday 7pm-9pm on Rinse 106.8FM.
In July 2011 Shadow City launched their debut night at The Rainbow Warehouse and Garden, Birmingham. It was a sellout straight away with 800 people queuing up to see Mista Men and The Heatwave
The night quickly took off and became a regular occurrence at The Rainbow Complex presenting the likes of Lunice, Walton, Deadboy, Oneman and even hosted this years Rinse FM winter tour. (which was off the head by the way!!!)
Here’s a few photos of the night by photographer Scarlett Shellis
The next Shadow City event is going to be somewhat different from the previous few, taking part in this years Birmingham Showcase. Part one taking place on 28th April hosted by a number of Birmingham club nights including FACE, NO HASSEL, SEEDY SONICS, DOLCE VITA bringing you music from Plastician, Hackman, Mele, Sub Focus and many more!
There will also be a live art gallery, street performers and a “chill out zone” incase the music ever gets too much for you!

This is one not to miss out on, early bird tickets start at just £9!
Make sure you add Shadow City on Facebook as well to keep up to date on forthcoming events!!
If you’re from Birmingham and haven’t been, where have you been? If you’re not form Birmingham, it is definitely worth a trip!
True Stories is my favourite Krust tune, come and get down to gems like this and more :)
Latest kicks i’m feeling are the Adidas Originals Gazelle: Going to indulge in a pair of these available at Adidas Originals on Newburgh Street, London.

If you missed this last August, fear not. This March, the Butterz label return to Cable, London to bring us another collosal night out.

To get you in the mood for the party, Grime producer Royal-T makes his Rinse debut with a release entitled Number One. Available in both 12″ and digital formats, Number One features 2 tracks, Inside The Ride and Cool Down – both of which have a really nice old school feel paired with that distinctive Royal-T sound. Number One drops on 5th March, ahead of his first full-length album which be released later on in the year.

Monday December 12th is shaping up to be a great day for Grime music. Not only is the greatly-anticipated Lord of the Mics 3 DVD being released (digital copy available on iTunes from December 11th) but also, a new EP from rising grime star, Merky ACE, entitled ‘Catch Up’.
Hailing from Lewisham, South East London, Merky ACE is part of the collective Family Tree (alongside MCs such as EGO, MIK, Shifman and TKO, aswell as producers Splurt Diablo and Faze Miyake). His extensive body of work including mixtapes such as ‘Headtop Turner’, ‘Who’s Merky?’ and ‘Blue Battlefield’ have earned him a number of plays and notable appearances on radio stations such as BBC 1Xtra, Kiss 100 and Rinse FM.
The ‘Catch Up’ EP comes as Merky’s 12th release and features tracks such as ’1 Spliff’ produced by Sukh Knight and ‘Everytime’ produced by Flava D. Other production comes from fellow Family Tree Members Faze Miyake and Splurt Diablo, as well as Neon Beats, The Killa Omen and Relentless.
The EP is a 10-track collection of the purest grime with a splash of dubstep. Not one to be missed! Check the advert below for a preview!
Catch a live PA from Merky ACE at Redux @ Hidden next Friday 9th December 2011.
Monday 21st November sees the 16th* installment of Rinse FM’s compilation CD series, mixed by Big Eyes favourites, Elijah and Skilliam. Rinse: 17 is a collection of 2011′s purest grime from past, present and future stars such as Wiley, P Money and Royal-T.
*There was no Rinse:13.
Kicking off the 27-track beast of a compilation is Butterz label soldier, Royal-T’s Orangeade VIP. I first heard this earlier this year vocalled by P Money, Blacks and Little Dee and could NOT get enough of the instrumental. It’s the perfect way to begin the CD and sets the tone for what else is to come. And on it’s way is DOK’s East Coast, Boo You from P Money and Blacks featuring Slickman (any verse that says “dem girlies dem girlies” has my seal of approval), and Rossi B And Luca’s Limehouse, shaping the beginnings of an immense tracklist.
The core of the compilation is made up of meaty, full-on grime (in true Butterz style) including Silo Pass from Bok Bok, Terror Danjah’s Full Attention with Ruby Lee Ryder on the vocals providing probably the catchiest chorus of the year, and a hefty collaboration from Rude Kid, Wizzy Wow, Terror Danjah and the master of contemporary funk, Swindle.
Track 17 holds my personal favourite remix of the year in the form of Trim’s I Am (Preditah remix). The Butterz label have provided a great platform for Trim to get the recognition and support he deserves in 2011. I’m expecting some serious heat from him in the upcoming months!
Picking up the pace again is arguably the biggest grime instrumental of the year, Faze Miyake’s Take Off. If I could MC (actually, my lack of skill isn’t going to stop me), I would pay Faze Miyake a lot of money to have this instrumental for my first single (look out for my mixtape out early 2012).
From start to finish, Elijah & SKilliam’s Rinse 17 perfectly epitomes grime music and although the CD mainly focuses on contemporary grime, I was EXTREMELY pleased to have the Ghetto Kyote instrumental hit me at track 20. Whether its Kano’s vocal or one of the many other versions, this instrumental is untouchable and sounds perfect next to both classic and contemporary grime.
The Rinse 17 mix winds down slowly through the sounds of DJ Q’s Woooo riddim remix, Starkey and Trim’s This Ain’t Me and the incredibly smoooooth Moodswings VIP from Swindle. I was going to go off on a whole tangent about how sick the Moodswings VIP is, but I’ll save that for another post. Just check out the video below.
As a warm-up to the launch of the CD, Elijah & Skilliam hosted a collossal show on Rinse FM last Thursday which had the likes of Terror Danjah, Sir Spyro, Rude Kid, Faze Miyake, Swindle, Royal-T, Rude Kid, D.O.K, Preditah and Mr Mitch all under one roof. EPIC stuff. Do your ears a huge favour and download the 4-hour set here.
The launch party for the upcoming CD takes place this Thursday (10th November) at FWD>> and features Royal-T, Scratcha DVA, Swindle V Silkie and of course Elijah & Skilliam themselves all taking to the decks to do what they do best. I don’t think I need to remind you to leave your best kicks at home, strictly old beaters for this one!
Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been up to recently!

Stamina was away again this month, so I played 10% drum & bass! Haha! Nah, well I did, but it was a good opportunity to play a lot of good music i’m feeling at the moment. I’m a bit quiet on the mic, but that’s probably for the best! I spoke a bit louder on the show in May if you fancy checking as well! http://podcast.dgen.net/rinsefm/podcast/Tasha100511.mp3
