Tonight! PROspec presents: Dub Phizix

Us Birmingham fam certainly aren’t shy of a good knees up! On Wednesday Leftfoot and Le Lieu played host to House producer Jacques Greene at The Bull’s Head; we were treated to big vibes with Drum and Bass pioneer dBridge educating the fans at Intel’s free Power Up night at The Rainbow on Thursday; and our friends at Movement brought Peverelist to town last night, keeping PST’s basement bass-heavy as usual. Tonight, we have the PROspec guys returning to their home at The Bull’s Head, keeping the heads happy as standard, by throwing accomplished Drum and Bass producer Dub Phizix into the equation! I love life.

I admit that I’d not been introduced to Dub Phizix prior to what will be remembered as the track that in 2011 overwhelmed the scene entirely – Marka. I first heard Marka dropped by Spectrasoul at a Shogun Audio event, the floor at Cable was actually bouncing as the crowd were getting fully involved in the deep bass and weighty vocals. Dub Phizix and regular collaborator Skeptical, alongside the vocals of Strategy, mixed up the rules into a new formula for Drum and Bass. With further releases on long standing respected labels such as Exit, Critical and Soul:r, as well as helping to set the bar high on newer labels such as Ingredients, his work has been described as ‘essential material’ by Mixmag. Keeping the atmosphere heavy and playing roller after roller, Dub Phizix is always on form and tonight will be no exception.

PROspec presents: Dub Phizix is sure to be a good’un as usual, with an intimate crowd and the finest in Drum and Bass. Rolling out the rhythms first, The Skeptics will be joining usual residents J-Dok and Process to warm you all up, followed by Dub Phizix at 12:00am.

Tickets are just £6 and I’d advise to grab yours here whilst there are still a small amount available.

Tonight! – Shelter Presents: Tokyo Prose

If you don’t know about Shelter, it’s time to get educated! Bringing a fresh vibe for the Birmingham heads, Shelter is pushing the scene forward with a serious selection of beats, ranging from Drum & Bass to Electronic, and Bass Music to Techno, with various sounds sprinkled into the mix as well. This time, there’s a special guest from the almighty Samurai Music / Samurai Red Seal labels in our midst…

Tonight, returning to the Hare & Hounds, Shelter presents: Tokyo Prose. Set to be full of soulful sounds, musical masterpieces and technical treats, if you are able to make it down tonight, I’d seriously suggest doing so. Incoming from New Zealand, this is Tokyo Prose’s first ever and only date playing in the UK, to be followed by the remainder of his short, but most definitely sweet European Tour.

Warming our ears up nicely will be support from Shelter residents Apartment:9732, Elkie & Sprite and BambooClart. The night is set to be a good’un!

Tickets are £4 in advance and are available here, or alternatively it’s a little more on the door. For more information and to RSVP check out the event here.

Rinse Presents: Roska 2

Roska’s weekly Rinse FM podcasts and his appearance at Lovebox festival provided the perfect soundtrack to my summer last year, so I was extremely pleased to get my hands on his second full-length EP, aptly titled, Roska 2.

Released on Rinse FM’s imprint, Rinse Presents, Roska 2 is a 10-track blend of heavy bass, sweet vocals, and good vibes. Kicking off with You Dun Know – a track I’ve heard at various clubs over the last 10 or so months and can’t get enough of. I think I love this track so much because it works perfectly in any situation, be it at a club or while you’re chilling out at home (or in my case, having a nervous breakdown over uni coursework).

Roska 2 experiments with a variety of sounds, reflecting his growth as a producer. Memories feat. Ruby Goe and OnRinseSinceZeroEight are two tracks that tilt over to the bouncy, electro side of the spectrum, but perfectly compliment heavier tracks such as Go featuring Mz Bratt and Spanner In The Works featuring Swindle and Funtcase, which close the album.

Track four, Do You Like This featuring Jamie George has already gained popularity over the Rinse FM circuit and, along with tracks five and seven The Oracle and Badman featuring Sweetie Irie – weighty tunes, inspired by Roska’s UK Funky roots – are set to be huge hits this summer.

Roska 2 is a great follow up to his previous releases and the ultimate warm up to summer raving. Catch him at this year’s Lovebox festival and every Tuesday 7pm-9pm on Rinse 106.8FM.
