Big Daddy Black Sheep

There’s a new sneaker store in Manchester City centre!

You may remember back in October I posted some news, bringing you a new sneaker / skate shop to sunny old Stockport… Well now The Black Sheep have just opened another store in the centre of Manchester!

Located conveniently between Dr. Hermans and Bench in the Northern Quarter, right where the Vans store used to be. The Black Sheep store bring shoe styles like; DC, Fallen, Etnies, Supra, Vans and clothing Brands such as Diamond x Grizzly, Heel Bruise, Neff, Primitive, Dephect and more.

Being 1 of 7 stores in the entire country to stock the Vans Syndicate range makes the store definitely one to visit, for your Syndicate cops!

Sunday 5th May held the mighty, Big Daddy Kane appearance in store for the opening day! It was a great day, full of pretty sneaker wearing girls, skaters, friends and the rest of the street. Performances from Dr. Syntax and Shotty Horrah warmed up the Mic before Big Daddy Kane stepped into the shop, kicked a freestyle for the old school heads and then had a one-on-one interview with Televised.

Here’s a few photos from the day! Shouts to Prankin Photography & C M Taylor Photography for the images below.

Shouts to Televised & The Black Sheep, go follow on Instagram and Facebook.

Peace and Love!

Moxie Talks Sneakers

I met our next interviewee through mutual friends a couple of years ago in Croatia at Outlook Festival and we regularly bump into each other at various events and nights out. She always has amazing trainers on, so I thought what better than to ask her more about them and share it with you all!
Name/Occupation?
Alice Moxom aka Moxie
DJ/ Promoter/ Artist
First sneakers you ever bought?
They were a pair of Adidas Gazelle kicks in suede navy blue. I remember having these in Primary school and loved them so much I bought about 3 pairs of them total.
Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
In school It was all about having a pair of Nike TN, Nike Air Max 90 or a pair of Nike Air Max 95′s. I remember when the TN dropped my mum was going to NY for a trip and I begged her to bring me back a pair from Footlocker that hadn’t arrived in London yet. She ended up buying me a pair with a light blue fade and then the swirly plastic bit at the bottom was navy blue. I will never forgot how excited I was when she bought them back, it made my year!

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
You can’t beat a Nike Air Max 90. They will always remain a classic right from my teens till now. Especially the Infrared kick, nothing can beat that colourway!
Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
My plum coloured blazers. Standard. They go with everything and they look smart so you can wear them for a meeting or out raving, either way they always work. I also have them in baby blue, black & stone grey. Definitely my favourite trainer for the past few years.
Beaters or best for raves?
Completely depends on where I’m going but some kicks will only be worn for social occasions such as my baby blue Blazers which I only wear in Summer time. I do own a pair of Nike Air max which I’ve had for about 7 years now and they are my raving trainers. They still look brand new as the main body of them is a plastic material so I can just wipe them down when I get back from a rave. Plus they look dope as they are black, pink and blue colour way.

Grails?
I fully regret not buying the dark grey Blazers that dropped last year. Sadly I wasn’t quick enough and they all sold out :(
Latest purchase?
Nike Free Run. These are my new fave kicks! They are so unbelievably comfortable and they’re the first running shoes I’ve ever owned. Definitely recommend buying a pair.

Your Nike Free Run’s aren’t just any regular pair, what’s the story behind these?
Recently I took part in a Nike X NTS run and because I’m a dj for NTS radio I was offered a free pair of Nike ID’s. I thought I’d use this opportunity to get some kicks that I wouldn’t usually buy as usually I’d go for a classic such as an Air Max. I’m so pleased I chose the Nike Free Run as they are the most comfortable trainers I have ever worn! I decided on the pink because that’s my favourite colour and the lime green because it would pop next to the pink and the grey/ black colourway. Of course I had to get Moxie written on the tongue as with all my ID’s! I initially got these for running but because I love them so much I might just save them for when I’m out and about and buy a new pair for running.

Favourite sneaker stores?
I wish I could say I have one. I find sneaker shopping really hard as i rarely find a pair that i love. Usually the mens colour ways are the ones I want but they never seem to do them in my size. We need more sneaker shops for girls! My heart broke when they stopped selling smaller sizes in Size?
Most memorable sneaker experience?
Something else I remember so clearly from school was how some of my mates would fold a sock up and stick it behind the tongue of their Nike Air Max 90s to make it pop more. It was all about adding those extra touches and trying to make your trainers stand out as much as possible.

Content Talks Sneakers

There was a time (when going out on consecutive work nights, didn’t make me feel like crap) that I’d see this lovely DJ on a regular basis, at FWD>> or other nights in London. Every time I’d see him, he’d have nice trainers on, so here’s an insight into how he fell into the sneaker game and what his favourite pairs are!

Name/Occupation?
Hi my names Tony aka Content, I’m a Dubstep Producer/DJ from Kent.

First sneakers you ever bought?
I think the first pair of kicks I bought was a pair of Reebok Classics. Still a staple in my trainer collection everyone needs a pair or 2.

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
Yes I cant for the life of me remember what style but my dad one year when I was dressing up for Halloween as Frankenstein let me wear his size 11 Reebok Pumps but I don’t remember which one’s I used to love them kicks.

Did you own them?
No, my rents saw fit to adorn my feet with Reebok classics and workouts as a child.

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
I live for AM1’s. I wear them practically everyday. My all time favourite would have to be Air Max 1 Safari’s with the grey leopard print. I owned a pair for like 2nights till I trashed them at a gig in Poland.

Do you have a pair of kicks in that you don’t wear very often and why?
I got a few pairs I don’t wear often, AM1 Clot x Kiss of Death, Nike Sb x Supreme and a Couple of pairs of Nike SB Janoski’s. But to be honest I buy kicks to wear, I don’t really buy them to look at them.

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
Nike SB Janoski’s (All black) and AM1 Hyperfuse (Original Release and an ID pair I made)

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying?
I try to not buy the exact same style but saying that Suede Canvas AM1’s in various colours I’ve had like 10 pairs of late. Also I have started buying the Air Flow’s in every colour way they are just too much.

Beaters or best for when you’re djing and/or in the crowd?
I don’t really have a pair of beaters, I have a few pairs for Festivals but when I’m DJ’ing or partying I will just rock what I feel to. Have trashed a fair few extremely collectable pairs with my casual approach to kicks but like I said I don’t like to just look at them until its too late and they fooked then I regret it.

Here’s 10 of my favourite pairs from my collection:

Grails?
I guess Nike Air Flow, I got a few pairs of them, was so glad when they decided to remake them.

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
I didn’t specifically travel to get them but I was in Poland and Chemneza 20 got Air Max Vac-Tech’s in and I had to cop them.

Latest purchase?
I’m actually on a bit of a hold at the moment. I’m selling off quite a few and I reluctantly this month sold my ClotxKissofdeath AM1’s unworn and boxed and a few of the other AM1’s and 95’s in the collection have begun to get sold off. My latest purchase was a second pair of the Air Flows in Cherry Red/Voltage Blue colour way. I had mangled the 1st pair in Cable during a birthday party.

Best sneaker experience?
Getting my Nike SB x Supreme TW 2’s. That was a good day.

Worst sneaker experience?
Ruining my Nike SB x Supreme TW 2’s by wearing them on a drunken night out where we decided to take my mates’ Land Rover out in the woods at 3 am and getting it stuck in a clay pit and had to walk out of the woods about 2 miles in the pee’ing rain.

Favourite sneaker stores?
Patta and Chmielna 20. Both sick shops.

Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
I think I want to make a few pairs on the ID store I’ve only made one set of AM1’s but there are so many potentials on their.

How has your taste in sneakers changed over the years?
I have always liked Nike. I’ve gone from AM 95’s to TN’s to 97’s and then I guess I have settled on AM1’s.

You recently sold a very special pair of kicks from your collection, is it hard to part with your sneakers and how did you decide which pairs to sell?
Yes it was a tough one, But It wasn’t too hard. Like I said I don’t buy kicks to look at and the ClotxKissofdeaths where just a stare at them item. I’ll probably reinvest the money in some Nike SB x Supreme TW 2’s if I can find a pair in my size, seeing as the drunken Land Rover trips don’t happen anymore.

Lori ‘Female Sneaker Fiend’ Lobenstine Talks Sneakers

So excited to bring you this interview, let me introduce pioneer and Ma’dukes of the female sneaker world, Lori Lobenstine!

Founder of Female Sneaker Fiend, her sneaker insights have been published in magazines and books in the United Statres, Europe, and Australia, including Sneaker Freaker, Sole Collector, WAH, Bitch, Lace, and more… but now it’s our turn. After FSF interviewed me back in 2009, I couldn’t wait to get my chance to get a few moments with Lori to switch roles and put the spotlight on her! So here it is…

Name/Occupation?
Lori Lobenstine, Founder, femalesneakerfiend.com
Author, Girls Got Kicks
Youth worker, basketball coach

First sneakers you ever bought?
I had to haggle with my mom to buy me the new high top Nikes (canvas All Courts) when they came out in the mid-70s! I had to pay her the difference over the Chucks and Keds she usually got me, out of my tiny allowance. I think it took over a month, but it was totally worth it! I LOVED those kicks and having all the boys looking at my fancy footwear on the playground. Remember, that was when Nike was brand new!

Do you have a pair of kicks that you don’t wear very often and why?
I have a beautiful pair of adidas from their Materials of the World Pack, with Indonesian fabric on a Metro Attitude Hi. I call them my “wedding sneakers” because I only wear them when I go to weddings!

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
I wear most of my collection, but my “everyday pairs” have to be able to handle New England weather and all the adventures that come with having a dog. Right now that includes my Converse Chucks with the padded ankle and tongue that came out a couple years back, my grey suede Puma Californias and my Supra Skytop Tufs for the winter. All durable and comfortable! Funny how for us sneaker fiends, we keep our most beloved kicks in their boxes and give so much more shine to the pairs we’re not as nervous to wear. It doesn’t make a lot of sense when I think about it. On those days I pull out something more eye-catching and say to hell with it.

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying?
I’m always buying 80s basketball high tops. I love the chunky silhouettes. And of course, they remind me of my heyday of balling in high school and college! Ebay is my spot for all that.

Beaters or best for going out to a party?
Bests if it’s a sneaker party, and mainly those are the only parties I go to.

Grails?
KangaROOS Walter Paytons and New Balance James Worthy’s. And I know a woman who wears my size and has both!

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
Well, I can’t say I’ve travelled overseas explicitly to get sneakers, but I do love the ones I pick up when I’m travelling! I went to Toronto and Holland on FSF biz, and I love my kicks from those trips…

Latest purchase?
Grey nubuck Adidas Forum lo’s from Crooked Tongues. Arriving any day now!

Best sneaker experience?
Starting femalesneakerfiend.com has been my best sneaker experience ever. I’ve met so many amazing females from around the globe, and the community vibe and support has been amazing. Much as I love my kicks, I love people even more.

Worst sneaker experience?
Getting caught in the rain in brand new suede Dunks at a sneaker event in NYC. I ended up going home on the subway after the event with bags on my feet! And they still got pretty ruined.

Favourite sneaker stores?
Harputs in San Fran, RIP. Bodega in Boston. Ebay. Crooked Tongues. Goliath in NYC, but they don’t have enough small sizes…

Tell us a bit about your Girls Got Kicks project, we’ve seen a lot of coverage over the internet and would like to hear it from the Lady herself, what influenced you to do it?
I wanted a permanent way to honour the females in sneaker culture. There are amazing books about sneaker culture and sneakers, but none featured women. To me, that is a BIG oversight! I wanted a beautiful coffee table book like “Where’d You Get Those?” (my personal favourite), that would make sure female sneaker fiends could stand up and be counted. I felt like with this kind of documentation of our community and our movement, no one could deny our existence! And crazy as that sounds, it still happens all the time. I still hear guys saying dumb stuff like, “oh, I just don’t know any girls into sneakers” or “do you know what you’re wearing?” or “did your boyfriend get you those?” It’s insulting.

Since finding Female Sneaker Fiend about 5 years ago, I feel that for me, it has opened my eyes to a whole world of chicks in kicks, and even though we are all different and live on other sides of the globe, I feel we can all share our similarities and love. Was this what you pictured for FSF when starting out?
I felt there needed to be a site dedicated to real female sneaker fiends, a space for us to come together and see each other and be recognized. What creating the site and writing Girls Got Kicks did was connect and bring out 1000’s of women around the world who love kicks. I hear about women traveling to other continents to meet friends they first “met” on FSF, or even meeting folks they never knew who are right in their own city. So yeah, hearing about you connecting with chicks in kicks all over—that’s exactly what I had in mind. I love it. And I can’t wait to bring a Girls Got Kicks party to the UK!

Anything else you’d like to add?
Don’t Sleep on the Ladies! Big ups to bigeyeslilsoles!

It’s an absolute pleasure to be acquainted with such a talented, devoted & inspiring woman. Thanks for all your inspiration and hard work for all the Female Sneaker Fiends Lori!

If your’re a chick with a love for kicks and not already a member of Female Sneaker Fiend, go get involved! Don’t forget to check out the Girls Got Kicks website, and buy the book! It’s so awesome, and not to mention Big Eyes family members Amara, Ugly Mely and Myself (Lemon) are in it ;)

Peace & Love!

Bannerworx Talks Sneakers

I can’t remember how I met this lovely DJ just over a year ago, but sharing a mutual love of Old School UKG, we’ve always got something to talk about! You might all remember the exclusive mix that he put together for us a while back.. well, Bannerworx is back for more and this time, he tells us about his sneakers!

Name/Occupation?
BANNERWORX / DJ, Photographer, Marketing.

First sneakers you ever bought?
I’m a bit old to remember, but I can say the Nike Cortez was my preferred sneaker of choice from my youth.

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
Anything Nike, Cortez, Air Flight’s, Air Jordan’s, Reebok Pumps.

Did you own them?
Yeah, I cherished my Air Jordan’s & Cortez’s, but as luck would have it as a kid growing up in New York, where every street corner had a park with hoops, I thought I could fly like Mike, ended them quickly.

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
That’s easy, Nike Air Max 95’s, just everything about them, the build, the air support, arch support, lacing up, and the fact that they could be worn straight from the street into the gym, and still support a bit of cross training.

Do you have a pair of kicks in your collection that you don’t wear very often and why?
I’m not that fussy really, but it would have to be my Nike Air Jordan CMFT Max Air 12′s. I bought them on a whim in Nike Town. I was shopping for new AF1’s and I saw them and had to have them. I’ll only wear them if the weather is right, and I’m not hopping on TFL, oh lawd let someone step on them……

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
These are my every day beaters! Simple, I wear them to work, wear them to clubs if need be. The Fila’s are my newest beaters, bargain of £20 from JD Sports online, and they are comfortable.

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying?
2 styles will always be in my collection, Air Max 90’s because they make my feet look small and they are comfortable, and give me a bit of height when they are box fresh. And my favourite style is the Air Force 1 Lo, absolute classic style, which will always be timeless, and with so many variations of the sneaker in the world, you can’t possibly tell me you’ll get bored of them.

Beaters or best for raves?
My rave beaters are definitely my black Air Force 1’s if I’m on the decks, and if I’m doing other work in the club, then it’s the all black Air Max’s, baby wipes have to see them both when I get back home afterwards.

Grails?
Nike Huraches, the White, Blue with hyper Green, think it was in ’89 I wanted them. My cousin had a pair, and they were the envy of everyone in the neighbourhood. I’ve been waiting for Nike to re-release them, once they do, I’m all over that like white on rice!

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
Nike Town in Oxford Circus sees me for the purchases really, unless it’s a pair I can get in my local FootLocker.

Latest purchase?
My Fila beaters, but as my birthday is approaching, I’m heading to Nike ID to design 2 new pairs for my collection.

Best sneaker experience?
Had to be my Reebok Pumps. I had the hi-top versions, with the blacktop soles. I loved pumping them up…

Worst sneaker experience?
……..until I broke the pump, on my Reebok Pumps. I think I actually cried, because I had saved up for them as well.

Favourite sneaker stores?
Always Nike Town, then Foot Locker, both on Oxford Street, London.

Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
Looking at the new Reebok Classics collection that Rick Ross keeps posting up, I know they’ll land here in the UK, but when? And any new colour ways for the Air Max 90’s

Have you got any sneaker related stories that have happened when you’ve been djing at a party?
I purchased some Adidas Stan Smiths, they are blue and yellow, so of course, I matched my outfit to go with them and wore them to a event, where I was up on a stage, during my set, people kept pointing at the bottom of the decks where my feet were and smiling, totally did not know what was there, but when I looked down at my feet they were glowing lol. Yeah glow in the dark paint all over the sneakers, so that was cool.

We both share a mutual love for UKG… how has the footwear ravers wear, changed from the Garage days, up until now?
It’s all changed, in the 90’s (Yes I am that old) we didn’t wear sneakers into raves. Hell, the only 2 people in the UKG scene who could do that was, DJ EZ and Karl “TuffEnuff” Brown, the rest of us had to wear loafers, shoes, Gucci’s. Now it’s a casual thing, no effort is really made by the guys, so they waltz into a rave wearing beaters, dusty Converse, old Stan Smiths. The cleanest footwear you’ll get now are Vans. It’s just not the same.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Big ups, to everyone showing love & support. Lel always my inspiration, Hatcha because if he didn’t kick me up the arse I wouldn’t be back DJing and my boys Shak H, Kallum, Kane, Jacob for having my back.

Ben ‘Bake Designs’ Talks Sneakers

You may have seen his Bake Designs tees in the HUGE giveaway we did early last year.. Since first meeting him on NYE 2010/2011 I’ve wanted to sit and sift through his MASSIVE tower of sneakers. Unfortunately, I don’t get to go to Bristol very often, but after sending him the interview questions nearly 8 months ago, Ben finally got them back to me, and here goes!
Name/Occupation?
My name’s Ben Hasking and I’m a freelance graphic designer as well as owning my own brand Bake Designs.

First sneakers you ever bought?
There are a couple of pairs that could answer this question, the first pair I ever remember buying for myself were a pair of Air Force 1 mid NYC’s. I picked them up from Footlocker in Reading back before I was really heavily into sneakers. That was back when I used to wear one pair of trainers into the ground then buy a new pair.

Then when I started to get more interested in trainers it was different; the pair that started my collection was a pair of Air Max 1s, in white, neutral grey, and flamingo. They’re still to this day one of the nicest pairs I own but they’re pretty battered now.

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
Back when I was young I used to wear a lot of Reebok classics and Nike Cortez. When I grew up I completely wrote off the Cortez, it just seemed like such a standard shoe because it was the sort of sneaker I had worn to school in P.E. and things like that. About two years ago I picked up another pair on Carnaby Street, bit of nostalgia.

Did you own them?
Like I said I had a few pairs of them in the past and I have a pair of them now. My style’s definitely changed but the kicks haven’t.
What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
There’s one or two that really sit top of my tree in terms of all time sneakers. The two that stand out most to me are the Kidrobot Air Max 1 and the Air Jordan 6 DMP.

The Kidrobot just has something about it, the Max 1 is a favourite silhouette for me and there aren’t many full leather Air Max 1s released any more. The perforated toe box just set of the perfect material make up. The colourway is just spot on as well, the colours just shouldn’t work together, black beige and pink. But they do and it just looks like such a sick premium shoe on foot.

The Jordan 6 DMP is a similar story for me, a favourite silhouette, in a favourite colourway. There has always been something black and gold colour ups. Where ever you see them or however they are used it is hard to get wrong. I just think the Black and Gold on that 6 are damn near perfect.

Do you have a pair of kicks in your collection that you don’t wear very often and why?
To be fair I tend to mix up it quite a bit, I don’t have a solid rotation of four or five styles, and with a different style fitting a different outfit I do wear a lot of variety. However in spite of that there are still pairs that get special treatment and get held back. I don’t own any kicks that many people would consider ‘grails’ but I own a lot that I hold in very high esteem.

I try my best not to wear either of my OG Max 1s too much, purely because they’re such beautiful shoes and I just don’t want to ruin them. Other than that my Jordan 3s don’t make too many appearances, neither do my Spacejams.

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?

To be fair my staples are probably my Black and Red Jordan 6′s, I’ve got more wear out of them than any other shoe I own and they still look perfect. Such a nice shape and such a perfect colourway.

Beaters or best for raves?
I’ve got a pair of all black leather Air Max 90s that I picked up from Overkill in Berlin, the quality of the materials on them is perfect and they’re one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve worn in years. Best thing is because they have a fully leather upper they’re pretty simple to clean. If I’m on a smarter tip for the rave the leather Janoskis make an appearance.

Grails?
Grails are hands down the Kidrobot Air Max 1, the Jordan 6 DMP rank similarly for me, but the Kidrobot is just that little bit less attainable.

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
I’ve picked up a few pairs abroad but I haven’t ever gone particularly far for a specific pair. I love sneakers and picking up something rare or unusual but I’m not going to fly to another country to queue to pick up a pair unless it’s next level.

Latest purchase?
Last pick up was a pair of Clarks Desert Troopers, picked them up from the Clarks online store in the sale. Nothing fancy, but a really nice shoe nonetheless. Before that it was the Nike ACG Meriwether Product (red), which is genuinely one of my best pick-ups in years. I had my eye on them as soon as I spotted them online. A couple of weeks later, I was in London for an interview and swung by 1948 to pick them up. So pleased with them.

Best sneaker experience?
Although I don’t actually like the Sneakers that came out of it anymore, doing my Nike IDs in the studio in New York was a pretty awesome experience. I had played around with make-ups online for years and never actually gone in on a pair.

A couple of years ago I was in New York pretty much on my own, I made an appointment, went in and designed some Air Max 90’s. The whole experience just felt so extravagant and brilliant. But as I said I’m not keen on the shoes any more, there were too many options and I got a bit carried away. I think I’ve worn them twice. The nicest part of the shoe is the laser etching on the upper.

Worst sneaker experience?
My worst sneaker experience is one I shared with my friend Adam Scotland, and to be fair I think you (Yani) and Witts were both there too. It was just before Christmas a couple of years ago and we all went down to Basement 45 in Bristol. Think it was James Blake, LV, and Girl Unit, I wore a pair of Air Max 1′s that I’ve always been a big fan of and hadn’t thought about where we were going.

We had been there a while, and Adam and I were stood at the back of the room and spotted someone hunched over pushing towards the back of the room. He got right in front of us and threw up all over our feet. Brutal.

Ten minutes later I saw the same guy necking some girl on the dance floor. Poor girl obviously didn’t have a clue. But the Air Max’s are all good now, a good clean sorted them right out.

Favourite sneaker stores?
I pick up a lot of my sneakers online to be fair, but for that it’s normally Crooked Tongues, Urban Industry, End Clothing, Hanon, and WellGosh. In Bristol the stand out stores are Cooshti, Fifty Fifty and Angry Daves, there’s obviously Size? as well but it’s nice to support the locals, they’re good guys.
Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
At the moment I’ve got my eyes firmly fixed on two releases, I’m holding out for the Cement 4s when they drop. Such a nice sneaker and it hasn’t seen a release in too long so I’m keen on those. As well as that I’ve taken a certain shine to the Leopard print Gourmet 35s. I’m not big on animal prints and lairy shoes but they’re just so clean.

Will we see any sneaker related prints for your tees?
It’s definitely something I’ve thought about, I mean a little while back I dropped a one off white tee with a black and Infrared print. I don’t know about direct references, it works for a lot of companies and brands but I’d rather make loose connections than direct references.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Hold Tight The Daily Street boys, Urban Industry boys, Donuts boys and anyone who has ever supported what I’m doing through Bake and subsequently given me sneaker monies.

Thanks so much Ben!

Lee – Patta – Talks Sneakers, Part 2

Thought I’d keep you all in suspense at what part 2 of this amazing interview would be like.. so, here it is!

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
Again, the Chuck Taylor. They are easy to wear, available in a
plethora of colourways and materials, and many of the special make ups
now come with Lunarlon foam sockliner for extra comfort. The Fragment
Design versions get a lot of daily wear.

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying? eg: Mine is the
AM90 and AM1.

Overall it’s Converse Chuck Taylor, and in recent times it’s the Nike
All Court. I love the simple aesthetic, and so far since its
reintroduction, most of the released versions are nice. The New
Balance 1300JP’s which are available every 5 years are a must. I have
also been buying quite some Nike SB Koston 1′s lately.

Beaters or best for raves?
Black Chuck Taylor, available everywhere in the world.

Grails?
The aforementioned Nike Airborne, and a make up which didn’t exist so
we created it ourselves: The Patta x Nike Air Max 1 in black ballistic
nylon. We had the honour to make those for our 5th year anniversary.
Also, a cool detail not a lot of people might know about is that the
sockliner graphic is taken from the previous Dutch currency called the
guilder, which we all miss. I redid the 5 guilder coin-graphic to
represent our 5 year existence.

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
I am the lazy and spoiled type. I rather pay more than travel and lay
in front of a store for a pair of shoes, so unfortunately I don’t
really have any cool or crazy stories about that.

Latest purchase?
Nike SB Koston 1 in anthracite. I don’t skate as much as I want to or
used to, but when I do, I’m still as picky as I was 20 years ago, from
the board set-up on down to the shoes. These are easily one of the
best skateboarding shoes ever in all departments: They’re light,
comfortable, durable, slim shaped, great grip, great board feel AND
they look good. Almost sounds like I’m on Nike SB’s payroll, but
they’re really that nice.

Best sneaker experience?
I am probably  going to sound old and cliche saying this, but just the
pre-internet days as a whole. Travelling, hunting, seeing and finding
regional stuff by chance. Everything is just a few clicks away now,
which is a gift and a curse. Winning an auction isn’t exciting in my
book.

Worst sneaker experience?
Accidentally stepping in dog poo. Owners please have some class and
act like you been there before, clean that shit up man.

Favourite sneaker stores?
All the independent sneaker stores worldwide still holding it down,
especially those tiny unknown ones hidden in the backstreets of Japan.
They always have my type of gems vacuum sealed and stashed in the
back.

Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
Yes, but if I tell you now I’ll have to kill you. Or myself.

Have you got any sneaker related stories that have happened when
you’ve been dj’ing at a party?

Not really entertaining stories… People taking pictures of my shoes,
or wanting to buy them off my feet. I don’t know, I never been THAT
excessively enthusiastic about obtaining a pair of sneakers. It’s all
good though.  One time a girl with a super nice white North Face parka
and white on white Air Force 1 Hi’s pulled out a big black marker for
me to sign them. I felt honoured and bad!

How do you think the sneaker scene differs between London and Amsterdam?
I’d say size, no pun intended. London is bigger than Amsterdam, so
naturally there is a bigger scene, with more knowledgable people, but
also more bellends. Furthermore, every city has it’s own variety and
favourite models. In Amsterdam it’s mostly Air Max 1′s, 90′s and any
type of Jordan’s, while in London I see a lot more adidas and Air Max
95. I haven’t been to London in a minute though, might be different
now.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for having me! Stay in tune with all things Patta via
patta.nl, you can also grab my “Classic Rap” mixtape and other goodies
for free in the blog-section. A special salute to the London crew:
GWar, Crooked, Spine, WeAreHQ, Footpatrol and a big big shout out to
Nando’s. Cheers!

Lee – Patta – Talks Sneakers, Part 1

I’m sure you all know about Patta.. one of the most well respected sneaker stores in Europe. Unfortunately we couldn’t head out to Amsterdam and chat to him in person, but we were lucky enough to grab an email interview with the designer and Media Director, Lee..

Name/Age/Occupation?
My name is Lee, born in 1975 and I am media director and designer at
Patta. I also still dabble a little bit in DJ’ing and music
production.

First sneakers you ever bought?
The first pair of sneakers I ever bought with my own money were the
Nike Air Max 1 when they first dropped. They looked so futuristic and
beautiful then, and they still do. The Air bubble and colourblocking
really set them apart from every other shoe at that time, it was
really cool and exciting to own a pair. I bought the varsity
blue/neutral grey women’s colourway. As an added bonus they were also 10
guilders cheaper than the mens colourway.

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
I had all types of adidas, Puma, but never really cared about them.
They would get beat with the quickness, thrown away and replaced. The
Nike Air Epic and New Balance 1300 were greatly desired from the other
side of the store window, but way out of reach due to the hefty
price tag. The first pair of shoes I specifically requested for from my
parents were the Nike Airborne.

Did you own them?
Eventually I did. And I was caring and really cherished those because
I thought they looked so good, plus they were kind of expensive for a
kids shoe. That shoe had all the goodness I still like today: Blue
hairy nap suede, grey mesh toe-box, nylon panels, golden swoosh,
perforated 3M accents. I think they only produced them in grade school
sizing. Unfortunately I do not own a deadstock pair of those for
nostalgia sakes, but if anybody does, hit me up!

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
I have been through many phases shoe-wise: Runners, tennis,
basketball, ACG, crazy extravagant colours, high end, sober functional
stuff, but the one model that always sticks around due to it’s sheer
simplicity and cleanness is definitely the Converse Chuck Taylor.

Do you have a pair of kicks in your collection that you don’t wear
very often and why?

I have two. Nike used to release city series’, and my friend Piet Parra
(Rockwell Clothing) was commissioned to color up a shoe to represent
the city of Amsterdam. He applied the house colours from a Dutch
supermarket chain called Albert Heijn, which were orange, blue and
white. However, during the development process of the shoe, the
supermarket changed up their styling and colours, rendering the initial
idea kind of pointless. So instead, an alternative colourway was
produced for retail, while the initial colourway became a hyperstrike
friends & family type of affair. It’s one of the first big projects we
were all involved with in the beginning days of Patta, so that pair
holds a special place. I wear them on rare occasions.

The Nike SB Zoom FC ”Fret Click” is another pair with a little story. Back in the early 90′s me and my close group of skateboard friends used to run wild wherever we went. We called ourselves the “Fret Click”, “Fret” derived from “Friends”. Style was very important to us: The way we would skate, the way we would dress, the brands we would sport, the music we listened to. Basically just a bunch of young self-centered snobs having fun, oblivious to the fact that we were influencing others. In honor of the infamous click and our dear friend Mike de Geus, a superb skater and member who passed away, Nike SB offered to make a tribute shoe. It’s a very simple shoe: White leather upper atop a gum bottom. The tongue label has a golden silhouette of Mike doing a huge ollie, “Fret Click” embroidered on the back. They’re a constant reminder of our brotherhood and golden glory days of fun, carefree living.

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying? eg: Mine is the AM90 and AM1.

Overall it’s Converse Chuck Taylor, and in recent times it’s the Nike
All Court. I love the simple aesthetic, and so far since its
reintroduction, most of the released versions are nice.

The New Balance 1300JP’s which are available every 5 years are a must. I have
also been buying quite some Nike SB Koston 1′s lately.

Keep checking back for the next part of this amazing interview!

We’ve been interviewing too many men lately.. so here’s another female sneaker fiend to add to our list!

Whether it’s on Rinse or out at a rave, Monki always plays an amazing set, and never disappoints. But it’s not only music that she’s into..
Name/Age/Occupation?
Monki / 20 / DJ

First sneakers you ever bought?
First sneakers I ever bought I was 11 or 12 and went and spent my pocket money with my mum on some size 3 red and white dunks from JD.. nuff respect in the play ground. I still have them!

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
Those dunks and there was this blue pair of Nikes I wanted when I was in infant school, thinking back at them they were pretty naff haha but they were blue and had like a running track on them.

Did you own them?
No, they didn’t have them in my size!

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
Air Max.. I’ve always bought them.. they’re comfortable and you can get them in pretty much every colour or material you want if you look hard enough.

Do you have a pair of kicks in your collection that you don’t wear very often and why?
I use to, but I sent them all to the philippines! My Nan sends clothes and stuff back to the village she’s from and so I gave them to my Nan to send. It kind of set my collection back a bit, but I never wore them anyway! And I think sneakers are for wearing!

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
White and Blue Air Max 90s, they go with everything, no brainer in the morning.

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying? eg: Mine is the AM90 and AM1.
Ye Air Max 90′s, I just always have.

Beaters or best for raves?
Both! But if I wear my bests I’m not going anywhere the rave, I’ll just jam.. I do have a pair of festival Air Max.. they’ve taken a battering but they still come out nice when I put them in the washing machine!
Grails?
Sounds boring but Airmax again, just as a shoe. Like you cant go wrong really!

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
Thailand! lol well, I was on holiday but I bought a pair of all red AM1s while I was out there.

Latest purchase?
I haven’t brought some in a while! The nice people at Nike have invited me back in to make another pair of IDs so I’m gonna do that which will settle my shoe fetish for a while and then I’m going to New York so I’m probs gonna go on a bit of a mad purchase while I’m out there.

Best sneaker experience?
Lol ermmm, it’s always nice when you get a fresh pair!

Worst sneaker experience?
Buying this new pair of Nikes when I was younger and on the first day someone opened the door on them and made a massive scratch down the side.

Favourite sneaker stores?
You know what, it is so hard to find good women’s sneakers in store! So I do a lot online to be honest.

Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
I’m a bit out the loop, to be honest.. I’ve never owned a pair of Air Max infrareds, which is just silly really init.. I’ll be keeping an eye out when I go to America.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Air Max tip .. as long as they’re not suede.. if you put them in the wash on a low heat.. they come out brand new!

Cim ‘No Boys Allowed’ Froeling Talks Sneakers

I’ve bought some rad kicks from this store, and over the months I’ve been chatting to the owner..

So a couple of months ago, I interviewed Cim, as I wanted to know where her love for sneakers came from!

Here it is!

Name/Age/Occupation?
Cim Froeling, 28, owner female sneakerstore: No Boys Allowed

First sneakers you ever bought?
I can’t remember.. first ones that mattered – Nike Air Max Classic BW

Is there a particular sneaker that sticks out from your youth?
Nike Air Classic BW.. I had a green pair after that (those were pricey, so I didn’t get many). I liked LA Gears, but my parents wouldn’t let me…

Later I got the dunks, that was when the love for sneakers came back times a thousand.

Did you own them?
Now I do…

What’s your favourite pair of sneakers of all time and why?
Nike Air Force 1 mid white white aka white uptowns and Asics Gel Lyte III (every one I own) both are classics you don’t have to think about.. always good!

Do you have a pair of kicks in your collection that you don’t wear very often and why?
I do have some samples or ones that I take care of, but in general I wear everything. At times I wear one pair a lot and then not for a while and then I find them again… does that make sense?

Staple everyday pair in your collection and why?
Black Nike air force 1 mid .. or Vans era black/grey.. both are shoes that are always good and understated… to wear them, I don’t have to think about it, or to be in any particular mood..

Is there a particular style that you keep re-buying? eg: Mine is the AM90 and AM1.
Puma Suede, Nike Air Force 1 Mid (4 pairs of whites already) and each season (at least) one pair of Asics Gel Lyte III!

What do you wear for raves?
I always wear AM90′s..

Furthest you’ve ever gone to get a pair?
Not that far…I’m one of those girls that can fall instantly for a shoe, shaking, sweating etc! But then I have to have it in my hands. Not from a piece of paper or on the internet. I had to look hard for the LA Gears though.. Found a nice pair of high quality vintage Flames.

I’m willing to go far for Nike trainer 1s (don’t exist in my size) and the Asics Gel Lyte III Patta (found them, but haven’t bought them yet)…

Latest purchase?
My latest ones were the Asics Gel Lyte III ARC colab from 2008.. But those were a gift…

Any new releases you’ve got your eye on?
Yes.. some cool Gel Lyte III’s and there are some beauties in the Vans Vault collection.

Favourite sneaker stores – apart from yours obviously!
Patta Amsterdam, Concrete The Hague

Best sneaker experience?
First Jordan V.. coincidence that Patta had one, my size. He bought one for his girl, but wrong size. This was 5 years ago.. so these were hard to come by back then.

Worst sneaker experience?
Not really an experience. but I can say that I have to puke from all the thin outsoles (like the converse all star) or the high heeled Jordan/Dunks… I really can NOT understand why they would do this.

What inspired you to start No Boys Allowed?
I wanted to find pretty things in small sizes and feel less frustration, bringing people together and create a platform to do nice things. But the core has always been and still is the love for sneakers.
