Ugly Mely x Reebok

Not so long ago, Reebok joined forces with a few inspiring ladies such as  french blogger sensation Ugly Mely, singer Nneka, MTV journalist Boss Lady,  illustrator Olka Osadzinska and jewelry designer Melody Ehsani to form a collaboration with each lady on the new Reebok Betwixt MID model.

The concept for the project was for each lady to incorporate their own design desires both personal & professional and life influences onto the Betwixt MID to create their own model.

I’m proud to present the Big Eyes Little Soles readers with the elegant and stylish, Ugly Mely x Reebok Betwixt MID!

As you can see, this sneaker was greatly influenced by her most frequent form of transportation, her beautiful bicycle!

Mely had this to say on her blog about her influence behind her design:
I immediately wanted the model to be like me and my bike as I ride it in my everyday life. I imagined my Reebok model with its same lightness, delicacy and simplicity. I took my leather bar tape, a strong but marked by purple color leather, so it gives it a feminine side. I also took the cream color of my bike and choose it for the Reebok bands framework, adding a snake skin effect.

I absolutely adore these! Really diggin’ the feminine, sleek silhouette along side the strong colours. I’d love to get hold of a pair of these beautiful sneakers and a peice of female sneaker history!

The sneakers will be presented  this October (from 1st to 30th october) at the french GalleryL’imprimerie (rue St Merri, in Paris) and also be sure to check out the Ugly Mely blog for a chance to win a pair of these beauties via her facebook competition which ends October 7th! Find out more information HERE.

Also – make sure you check out the other collaborations by using the links at the top of the post!

Peace & Love!

MARS…. Make Way For Gentry

Gentry Humphrey was spotted wearing a new, exclusive Air Jordan IV Retro colour-way this weekend at the Quai 54 Streetball Tournament in Pairs…. but what are they I hear you ask?

Well, they appear to be a pair of Air Jordan IV Retro’s which have been designed exclusively for Mr Humphrey himself! Gentry’s Jordan 4 features a colour-way that looks alot like the Air Jordan Retro 7′s ‘Year of the Rabbit’ rockin’ the white upper with red and gold accents (freshhhhh).

You’ll also notice that the ankle features an illustration of Gentry as “G-Money”, similar to the MARS Blackmon logo as seen in 2006 on the Air Jordan IV Retro Mars Blackmon…….move over MARS, G-Money is in the house!

Shout outs to DCS for the pics! Go check his full album of the Quai 54 International Streetball Tournament, some sick shots, I wish I was there!

Keep it Big Eyes!

Hello from Amber

Yoo! I’m Amber. I’m a 21 year old footwear fiend and the newest member of the Big Eyes fam repping from Birmingham!

Before making it official Yani asked me to write a post on my favorite ever pair of trainers so here it is.
Enjoy!

Adidas introduced a whole new concept to the sneaker world, launching Adicolor in 1993. This series of white shoe models were all sold with a pack of fast drying waterproof coloured marker pens so anyone could customise their shoes in any way they wanted. Adicolor then transformed into collaborations with World known artists and designers including the Adicolor Black Series with Keith Hairing and Jeremy Scott, The Blue Series with Cey Adams, Tara Okamoto for The Yellow Series but my favourite of all The Pink Series created by French street artist and now designer, Fafi.

Pics

Fafi started out painting witty feminine stereotypes on the walls of her hometown, Toulouse. Attention fast spread and Fafi’s work soon blew up as she collaborated with the likes of MAC, LeSportSac, Married to the Mob and even turned Lily Allen into one of her signature ‘Fafinettes’ for Mark Ronsons version of ‘Oh My God’.
I have a longstanding love for Fafi and I have collected different pieces of her work from a young age from canvases to clothing to trainers to models.

I have to admit when the Adicolor HI P2 was released I wasn’t camping out at the nearest sneaker outlet, infact I didn’t get my hands on these until a year later when I came across a pair in my size on eBay. Without hesitating I put in my highest bid and 3 days later they arrived. I carefully took them out of the silky Fafinette printed drawstring bag and noticed the small wooden doll heads on the strings that matched those on the laces of the shoe. The tongue, toe box and inner all crafted from the same printed silky fabric that made up the drawstring bag. The characters on the upper are so detailed as if Fafi actually drew them on herself. It was love at first sight.
In a campaign video for Adicolor Fafi said “I wanted something that I could have drawn myself on the shoe. So I decided to make a print to put all over the inside of the shoe. I’m very happy to work on this special colour for this project because when I was little I was a real tomboy and I didn’t like pink – I didn’t like all the girly stuff – but then, when I grew up, I stared to understand things about sweetness, about femininity – and pink is directly related to that.”

Once this shoe was on, that was it. It wasn’t coming off. They were definitely my favourite pair of trainers and even though these days I am definitely more of a Nike girl, Adidas and specifically these trainers were the gateway to my ever-growing sneaker obsession! I wore them until their very death when sadly my Mum threw them out! (Never forgiven) I’ve since searched the internet to attempt to get my hands on another pair but no luck; I’d give up half of my other trainers to get my hands on a pair of these again!

I carried on collecting more of Fafi’s collaborations with Adidas. Including a pair of yellow Honey Mid’s and a mint green pair Stan Smith Sleek’s both from the Sleek Series plus a pair of black and white Velcro Stan Smith’s.
If you haven’t seen her work Check it out! She is forever adding to the world of Fafinettes!

More from me soon!

Peace, Amber x

Lemon’s Mini Guide To Restoring and Customising Sneaks!

Restoring & Customising Sneakers…..

This weekend I didn’t have a lot to do, and it is Manchester so the weather wasn’t that great but I was feeling too creative to do nothing so I didn’t let the monotony of weekend life defeat me!

SO… I decided after my morning wake ‘n’ bake ‘n’ brew to get some old kicks out and resurrect them back to their natural beauty :)

To start, I would make sure you’ve got the following:

- The Playlist for your creativity -> CLICK HERE
- Rubber gloves! (Especially if you want to save your nail varnish!)
- Acetone (I just use nail polish remover as I cant find actual ‘Acetone’)
- Matte varnish
- Masking tape
- Tooth brush for scrubbing the seams
- Scotch bright pads (the yellow sponges with green scouring pads on the other side)
- Cotton buds
- Acrylics (preferable good quality leather acrylics)
- Permanent Markers
- Paint brushes
- A plate or old lunch box for a paint pallet to mix colours
- A cup of water to keep the paint brushes fresh

FIRST THINGS FIRST – take out the laces.

To start, we need to prepare the kicks for paint! Start by putting on your marigolds and using some hot water with your toothbrush to scrub the seams of the shoes. Remove any other dirt and grime from the sneaker before we start on the acetone. Next we need to make sure the room is well ventilated because we’re now going to add some acetone/nail polish remover to the ‘Scotch Bright’ sponge (or cotton pads) and rub it over the leather parts you’re planning on painting. This will remove the waxy outer layer covering the sneakers which makes sure the paint will bond to the original leather properly preventing flakes! Don’t be alarmed if you see the paint on the sponge and the leather starts to feel funny, this is supposed to happen. Keep using fresh parts of the sponge to ensure you remove evenly. Make sure you also give the sneaker a little wipe down after your finished to ensure you’ve removed any excess cotton/sponge.

Next we need to mask them babies up! Use your masking tape to protect the parts you’re not going to paint like the top of the inside of the shoe, and the outer-sole. Always use making tapes wherever you can! No matter how much of a steady hand you think you have, you will soon see that masking tape will be your best friend as it makes painting them so much smoother and gives more of an even finish leaving less room for error!

Now you have your canvas, its time to get painting! Always start with the seams, trust me it makes the ride so much easier. Make sure you get a firm brush and get right into all those nooks and crannies, otherwise you may be left with a few dirty looking spots! I try to use long, even brush strokes when painting – this ensures an overall even and smooth finish. You will probably need to paint a base coat first, especially if you want to change from the original colour so stock up on the white paint! Don’t be worried if you have to use a few coats, you don’t want to be caking it on but as long as you leave the layers to dry before painting the next one, you should be all gravy.

When you are happy with the colours and the finish, carefully put off the masking tape and add the finishing touches around the seams etc. then leave them aside to dry for half a day/overnight.

Don’t forget, it’s your shoe so if you’re feeling extra creative, you can add some graff or sketch something on and paint that – Make it custom and make it YOURS!

I used some bright red, matte ‘Viva Glam’ Mac lipstick and parked a big smacker on the side of a pair of my AM 90s. Unfortunately the Red didn’t stand out as much as I wanted it to against the black, but I know it will look dope if I do it again but next time on a lighter background – see I’m no pro, it’s all a giant learning curve!

The final step is to seal the deal with the varnish. The varnish is important as it helps seal the shoes. It can also help to add elasticity to the end result, which protects the shoe from general wear and tear. To varnish, apply/spray two thin, even coats all over the shoe and set to dry overnight then you can lace them babies UP!

Check out the kicks I did this weekend:

Restored ‘White Nike Royals’ – These were for my best friend and my house mate Leah Cakes, she was over the moon!

I had some old and dull grey AM90′s lying about that I decided needed a new outfit, so I customised these back to life!

Restored Adidas Originals (yes, yes I know… I just couldn’t help myself with the Jordan insole)

I also vamped up these babies while I was at it, the while sole was starting to crack and I added a few Lemony bits to these Customised AM90s

Remember I’m no pro, this is just a fun hobby that challenges my creativity whilst feeding my love for kicks and the best thing is – you can only get better with practice! Not to mention that immense feeling when you’ve restored and old natty-ratty pair of kicks back to their natural beauty! You SHALL go to the ball Cinders!

Notes:

Don’t expect all materials to be so adaptable, for instance I know from experience that patent leather doesn’t take the paint very well.

Keep using fresh water to wash the paint brushes to keep the brushes fresh and avoid mixing unwanted cocktails of paint.

Remember to use the Acetone (or nail polish remover) in a well ventilated room, don’t want to be passing out and landing face first in the paint!

So why not try it yourself and tweet us your photos @BigEyesLilSoles

Peace, Riz & CAKE!

WINGS for the Future….

A work of art or a pair of sneakers – You decide! It’s not very often that a Jordan collaboration happens, but when it does – oh it’s magical!

You may of already heard of Liverpudlian artist David White in the early 2000′s when he painted his favourite Jordan’s onto canvas with his own style! Well…he’s baaaack! David was asked to tag team with the Jordan Brand again to create his 2nd Air Jordan I sneaker. As you can see he stuck to using the primary Jordan colours with an burst of David White energy!

“The absolute intent was to make something that actually looked animated and dynamic, explosive and alive even when standing still. I wanted the shoe to almost look like it had been dipped in paint and is exploding with energy” said Mr White, and he was right!

The shoe features a black / red / white colour-way, all the while incorporating leather, suede, and (obviously) the elephant print, all united with a splash of David White! But…have you noticed something….missing? That’s right – no SWOOSH! Personally, I miss the swoosh but I defiantly think that the rest of the sneaker makes up for it in a very unique way! A beautiful pair of trainers that I don’t think I could ever wear outside.. mos def ‘shelf shoes’!

The ‘Wings For The Future’ tag reads:

“With every pair you purchase, a proportion of the proceedings will benefit local communities as a part of Jordan’s WINGS for the Future.

WINGS for the Future is Jordan’s commitment to inspire and enable youth to learn more and be creative all while making a lasting impact on the world.”

These babies were released on a limited basis to a few of the major Jordan brand retailers across the world with the RRP at $175, but since Saturday I have seen a few pairs on ebay etc. topping more than £1,000!

There have been mixed emotions from the sneaker community, but what do YOU think? Let us know!

Air Jordan 1 Dave White
Style: 464803-001
Color: Black/Sport Red-White-Cement Grey
Release Date: February 11th, 2012 (last Saturday)

It’s An Asics Day!

Just came across these absolute BEASTS teased on Twitter by the man himself!..

Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel Lyte III ‘Leather Backs’

Stop teasing us Ronnie, these are too sick! The soft black leather upper set against charcoal grey suede toe box with the bright blue accents makes this sneaker one of the smartest releases yet.

This shoe is amazing! I love all of the RF x Asics Gel Lyte III’s but these have something really subtle but totally special about them. They’re a sneaker that wont age or look dated, they’ll work with every trend we’ve got ahead of us.

I’m looking forward to the shoots these sneakers are involved in, Ronnie Fieg’s collabs always come with something amazing to look at!
