Caught Slippin’

OK, guys, I’m kind of handing this post over to all of you out there because I need some advice.

Here’s the situation: I’m most definitely an Air Max girl, but there is one thing that REALLY bothers me about wearing them: often, the tongues slip down to the sides as I wear the shoe, mainly with AM1s, AM Lights and AM90s. For instance, I went to the gym at 10am today, in my ultimate AM90 beaters, with the tongues dead centre nevertheless, and when I got home this is the state they were in:

null

I asked on Twitter a while back if anybody knew what to do about it & the basic response was to lace up tighter. Trust me when I say the AM90s above were laced up tighter than bowling shoes until this morning, when I loosened them up a bit to run this experiment. The super tight lacing looked pretty stupid and it made the shoes uncomfortabe. It definitely doesn’t happen with all Air Max styles; the ones with puffier tongues tend to sit in place better, and it’s definitely not always so it’s not always an issue. But I’m curious, does it happen with other sneakers from different brands with similar silhouettes to the to the Air Max 1/Light/90?Surely somebody out there can tell me, how do I get around this. What’s the answer to my dilemma? Any ideas? Leave me a comment on here or Tweet me & let me know if it happens to you and/or what to do about it.

Until next time…

‘Sneaking Into Fashion’ Exhibition

Hey everybody,

Just thought I’d give you a quick heads-up about a cool exhibition coming up which you might wanna check out. Online shoe retailer Javari has put together what looks like a pretty awesome exhibit all about “tracking trainers’ journey through popular culture”. It features sneakers from the personal collections of a handful of stylish celebs, as well a fairly in-depth look at the development of the sneaker over the years and their relevance in contemporary social and popular culture. It covers all sorts, from the earliest 1960s Vans releases to the most recent Yeezy-mania and Isabel Marant ‘Bekket’ wedge-heeled sneakers that have burst onto the scene in recent months.

The details are as follows:

Sneaking Into Fashion

Where: Covent Garden Piazza, Market Building, Central Avenue, London, WC2E 8RF
When: 18th-28th October 2012
Opening hours: 9am – 7pm
Entrance: FREE

I’ll definitely be checking it out, and if you want to get a little bit more insight or info on where the current sneaker scene came from and where it’s going, it would definitely be worth a visit. I mean, come on, it’s FREE!

Check out more info right here.

Enjoy, guys!

Question Time With Chloë – Laces

Well done, guys, you got through Monday. Let’s forget the day’s stresses and strains for just a second here and turn our minds to a subject that gets perhaps less exposure than it should: SHOELACES. I’m curious, and I’ve since I’ve been lacing up quite a few new pairs recently, I wanted to turn the vote to the public, so:

What is your favourite style of lacing in general?

We should all be extremely grateful to some guy called Ian who had enough time on his hands (…too much) to make this amazing, and quite frankly, overwhelming, website. Going by Shoelace Sensei Ian’s guide, I think my preferred style is ‘over-under lacing’ or ‘display shoe lacing’. On shoes like Jordans, for example, where I tend to want the laces to be hidden, I’d go with the ‘display’ style, but with any Air Max type silhouette, say, I would go with ‘over-under’, a) because it’s easy and I’m lazy and b) because I love to wear the laces out.

I just grabbed the first two pairs I could find to show you what I mean but here is

Exhibit A

Over-underwhich I believe is ‘over-under’, and

Exhibit B

Display lacing

which, correct me if I am wrong, are ‘display’ laced

Simpkin

Simpkin likes this style.

My LEAST favourite, in fact it is a dislike so strong it that verges on a hatred, is ‘straight’ or ‘bar’ lacing. It just makes me cringe, I can’t explain why.

Also, does anyone remember back in early high-school (if you are around my age/early 20s) when there was that sudden craze for what Shoelace Sensei Ian calls ‘supernova’ and ‘starburst’ lacing? My friend Tarja showed me how to do that to a pair of Air Max 95s when we were bunking off Physics on the tennis courts or something. We had matching ones except mine were red and hers were blue and we thought it was the coolest thing ever. I might bring that back. C’mon, who’s with me?

Anyway, I’m not on Facebook because I am from prehistoric times, so leave me comments on here and tell me about your lacing loves/hates!

P.S. Based God who? THANK YOU IAN.

Shoe-ston, We Have a Problem…

Okay, okay, guys, I know that was a HORRIBLE title but gimme a break, I’m new around here & it’s my birthday. I hope I didn’t just totally blow it with you guys already.

Anyway. Has anyone seen that show My Strange Addiction where there’s a woman addicted to her husband’s ashes, & a woman who’s addicted to bleach & a woman with a really silky looking weave who’s addicted to mothballs? Yeah, well, if you haven’t you should and if you have, I think I need to go on it. This is my addiction:

Vans Authentics
Vans Authentics. I have bought 3 pairs in the past 4 days alone. I keep seeing more & more that I want. I think about them all the time. I even searched for infant versions just to see what they look like (so cute/no I do not have any infants). I lurk around eBay looking for cool ones all the time like a burglar staking out a bank. You get the picture. So here are my new additions:
Whites
Grey suede
Carmine rose

My faves of the three pairs above are actually the straight coke white ones. The pink(/carmine rose) ones are bananas and you just can’t go wrong with grey suede, right?!

And the thing is, this craving didn’t start until I realised it was almost SUMMER and now every single time I get dressed, in my head I’m thinking about how well a pair of Auths in such-and-such a colorway would complete the outfit. They are so simple. Just right. Nothing fancy. Sturdy but not stiff. Not showy but just crisp enough. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.

My addiction is made 100x worse by the fact that I live really, really near an awesome sneaker store (Offspring in Camden for those who wanna know/stalk) so I’m thinking tomorrow maybe go in for these babies:

Dark Denim Chambray Please tell me someone else out there feels the same? And that they are embarrassed about their recycling always looking like this?

Recycling

Okay, this was way too long, I’ve got to calm down and go to sleep now. Picture me, Googling ‘mint green vans authentic’, softly weeping, hugging the screen.

New Kid on the Blog

Hey, what’s up, guys? I’m Chloë and I’m new around here (so shout-outs to Yani for inviting me to join this esteemed blog). I just thought I should make my face known and throw out a quick few words to say what I’m about when it comes to my footwear.

Me

So, yeah, that’s my face & if you see me about, say hi. But, really, we all know we’re not here to look at people’s faces, so on to the good stuff…

When it comes to kicks, I am mainly a Nike, Jordan and Vans head, as many people are these days, but I like to throw a little Asics into the mix or really whatever catches my eye. I’m massively drawn to simplicity; all black or monochrome colorways are my dream, and I can never resist a particularly ‘girly’ looking version of any given style. My fave silhouette of all time has to be the classic Nike Air Max 1 – I just don’t think you can go wrong with them, they’re timeless, perfect, a statement piece. I love ‘em. Air Max ’90s and Vans Authentics come a very close second and third. I did warn you I liked simple! Also gotta put out my LOVE for Jordan Spiz’ikes, one of the most underrated sneakers out there, I think. My worst thing sneaker-related crime is dirty white laces. Clean them! Short cycle, 40°, bit of fabric softener if you wanna get really wild.

Anyway, I’ll be back soon. In the meantime here are few from my collection:

Spiz'ikes
Burgundies
Suede Vans
Safari style
Vandal
VT 90s
Highlighters
Classic AF1s
Aztecs

And the pièce de résistance, my fave pair to ever grace my feet, my Jordan 3 Black Cats:

Blacked Out 3s

Probably went a bit over-the-top there but anyway, hello, and good morning/afternoon/evening/night!
